This text is an article published in Le Monde in november 1995. It deals with the developpement of Carrefour in Latin America.
Carrefour, the number one Franch chain of hypermarket opened 7 stores in Mexico in 1995 at a time when the crisis was at its height.
Unlike its US competitors, the French group, was undeterred by then galloping inflation and poor economic prospects, and went ahead with its projects.
The French giant retailer fared relatively well in comparison with other groups and small retailers specializing in consumer durables, the sales of which dropped 40% in 1995.
The relative success of the French group was due to a combinaison of factors.
While the targeted middle-class consumer saw his purchasing power significantly fall, sales of foodstuffs remained stable to the detriment of consumer durables.
Furthermore, experience of foreign markets and partnerships with reliable local distributors and suppliers, in addition to law-price policy, ensured customer loyalty.
